This season, Lester made history when he became the first African American to compete in NASCAR's top division since Willy T. Ribbs 20 years ago. He competed in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race in Atlanta earlier this year. He also ran at Michigan International Speedway, which Auto Club Speedway was patterned after, and finished on the lead lap in 32nd place. The Oakland, Calif., native also plans to compete in the SONY HD 500 on Labor Day NASCAR weekend. Tickets are on sale now for that event by calling 800-944-RACE or by logging on to www.racetickets.com.
As driver of the No. 22 Bill Davis Racing Toyota Tundra in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and part time driver of the No. 23 Waste Management Dodge in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, Lester has taken a different path than most to get to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984, Lester spent 16 years Hewlett-Packard as a manager.
Though Lester, 45, worked full-time, he still found time to continue his passion, racing. He and his wife made the decision for him to race full-time. In 1999, Lester competed in his first NASCAR race in the Busch Series event at Watkins Glen International.
Bullrun, the world's most glamorous road rally, features many Hollywood celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Dennis Rodman, Hayden Christenson and Olympic gold-medalist Carl Lewis in a cross country road rally from New York to Los Angeles. Bullrun is expected to stop by Auto Club Speedway between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Entry into the Auto Club Speedway Garage Sale and Bullrun is free. Drastically reduced Auto Club Speedway merchandise will be available at the Garage Sale.
