California Fanzone To Make Big Splash

California sea lions and sand castles are not often found in San Bernardino County - until now, when the beauty of the Western coastline will be brought to Auto Club Speedway's Opportunity, California FanZone during the SONY HD 500 this Labor Day weekend (September 1-3).

Opportunity, California FanZone debuts during the NASCAR festivities at Auto Club Speedway.  This multi-million dollar facility enhancement already includes delicious food at Apex by Wolfgang Puck, amazing sounds at the entertainment stage, the Speedway's official retail store called Impulse, shade and leisure areas that have nearly doubled the size of the FanZone. This area now will include a California sea lion exhibit and world-champion sand castle builders constructing custom sand castles reminiscent of a day spent at any one of Southern California's world-renowned beaches with a NASCAR twist. Guests will be handed a FanZone map and schedule upon entering the ticket gates.

Sea Lion Encounter is an exhibit that is set up by the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and is part of the S.L.E.W.T.H. (Science, Learning and Experimenting with the Help of Sea Lions) program.  The sea lions have been featured on several nationally broadcast programs, including National Geographic:Explorer, Dateline NBC, and networks such as BBC and CNN. They were also the official mascot & marine ambassador for the U.S. Pavilion at the World's Fair in Portugal, 1998. The sea lions will be located on the west side of the FanZone, north of Gate 16, next to the SPEED Stage.

Sandscapes, 12-time World Sand Sculpture Making title-holders, will be constructing imaginative creations from sand in the FanZone, near Gate 16, next to the SPEED Stage. Sandscapes has recreated scenes from legendary movies, famous landmarks and monumental occasions in history, all from sand and water. Their work is world-renowned and they will create special designs, including racecars for viewing during the SONY HD 500 event.

If that wasn't enough, the Opportunity, California FanZone will also host roving magicians, characters from Sony Pictures new movie Open Season, a mariachi band and Kangaroo Acrobats. There will be something to please every guest at the Opportunity, California FanZone during the NASCAR Labor Day weekend at Auto Club Speedway.

With the action of NASCAR heading to Auto Club Speedway in less than a week, the finishing touches are being added to the Opportunity, California FanZone. The final partner signage is being applied to the FanZone side of the grandstands.  Next weekend, race fans will ascend on Auto Club Speedway for the SONY HD 500 making this the State of California's largest single-day, ticketed sporting event.

Race fans can be a part of the all-new Opportunity, California FanZone this Labor Day weekend at Auto Club Speedway.  Last year, Kyle Busch became the youngest driver in NASCAR history to win a NEXTEL Cup Series event at the young age of 20. This year, he returns to the two-mile, D-shaped oval to defend his crown from a field of hungry NEXTEL drivers all striving to make the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup.

The racing will be intense and the entertainment will be incredible. To get tickets to the NASCAR Labor Day weekend at Auto Club Speedway, call 800-944-RACE [7223] or log on to
