Kurt Busch did it again - clinched the pole position for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway. Not only did he take the top spot in February for the Auto Club 500, but he did it again today when he lapped the 2-mile, D-shaped oval with a quick time of 39.016 mph (184.549 mph) to secure the pole position for the SONY HD 500 to be held Sunday.
"It was really a matter of finding the right adjustment to make with the conditions today," Busch said. "I'm real happy with the adjustments we made. We didn't think we had a shot at the pole."
This is his fifth pole position of the season - more than any other driver - and eighth of his career. Busch is no stranger to success at Auto Club Speedway with a win in the 2004 Auto Club 500.
"The race track has come into its own here in California," he said. ¿I think that's what makes good championship teams and cars that go into victory lane have the ability to adjust throughout the race.¿
Starting alongside Busch on the front row is the No. 25 Garnier Fructis/GMAC Chevrolet piloted by 22-year old Brian Vickers. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has posted five top-10 starts in his six Auto Club Speedway races.
Clint Bowyer secured the third spot in the starting grid, his first top-10 start in two races at Auto Club Speedway. Scott Riggs earned a fourth place start. Martin Truex Jr. continued the rookie success that Bowyer displayed with a fifth place start. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start sixth while Jeff Burton qualified seventh. Eighth place was filled by rookie Denny Hamlin, ninth by Kasey Kahne and rounding out the top-10 qualifiers was Busch¿s younger brother and defending winner of this weekend¿s SONY HD 500 Kyle Busch.
