Super Associations Invade Auto Club Dragway to Begin their 2009 Campaigns

The Southern California Super Comp Association and the Southern California Pro Gas Association groups got their 2009 seasons underway at the Dragway on January 24th and 25th.  Over 100 cars came out for the first chance at picking up some cash and some points toward championships in each group.  Saturday’s action in Super Comp saw Bobby Dye Jr. in his Specialty Fasteners dragster take the win over “Hollywood” Matt Fischle.  In very close race, Bobby used a .014 reaction time and a dead-on-the-index 8.907 to take out Matt’s Lucas Oil machine.  Mat was stellar on the tree with a .007 leave but took a little too much stripe on the top end, breaking out by one thousandth of a second!  Morgan Rash was the lone semi-finalist.  In Pro Gas action, taking top honors for Saturday was Chris Newman in his 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.  Newman squeezed out a close one to win by .007 over Glen Smith.  Newman left the starting line behind Smith by .003 but ran closer to the 9.90 index with a 9.919 compared to Smith’s 9.929.  Dave Stafford and Travis Balough were the semi-finalist in this tough Pro Gas field.

With Saturday’s action in the record books, racers gathered again on Sunday with their eyes on the big prize.  In the Super Comp class, reigning Division 7 Super Comp Champion Aaron Kinard took the win over John Richardson in a close double breakout affair.  Kinard used a .017 reaction time advantage to hold on for the win running 8.878 on the 8.90 index while Richardson had to run 8.870 to try to make-up for his tardy leave.  Andy MacDougal was the lone semi-finalist.  Saturday’s winner Bobby Dye Jr. added to his early points lead with a strong quarter-final finish.  The Pro Gas crown went to Saturday runner-up, Glen Smith.  Glen drove his sweet Henry J to the win over Randy Balough in his Uncle Joe Benson sponsored Corvette.  In a very close finish, Smith used his .010 reaction time to light the win light by just three thousandths of a second by running 9.915 compared to Balough’s dead-on 9.908.  Wow, what a great way to finish off the weekend!  Mike Blodgett and Steve Parsons were the semi-finalists.  Smith’s strong finish on both days, easily gave him the early points lead for the season-ending championship.  Great job Glen!

The great racing action continues at Auto Club Dragway throughout 2009 with close and exciting racing for fans of all ages.  Be sure to check the schedule for future events and we hope to see you at the Dragway really soon!
