San Bernardino County, Calif. (March 24, 2009) – Auto Club Speedway and The NASCAR Foundation recently awarded San Bernardino County students from Chaffey and AB Miller High Schools $1,000 grants for developing projects that will positively impact their communities.

“I am so proud with each of our students,” shares Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker.  “The Speedway’s involvement may have helped provide our students with a life changing experience, but it’s these students that will take everything they learned from the Nobel Peace Laureates to positively impact their communities.”

Joseph Escobar, a senior at Chaffey High School was presented a $1,000 check for a presentation on the 2008 U.S. presidential candidates and mock election with over 600 students participating. With the grant money, he plans to create a program that would encourage students to visit the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance.

AB Miller High School seniors Denise Magana and Melanie Martinez were also presented a $1,000 check which they will use to create a book filled with personal stories written by students at the high school. A copy of the book will be placed into the collections at the Lewis Library and Technology Center in Fontana.

Last fall, Auto Club Speedway in partnership with The NASCAR Foundation and the County of San Bernardino, sponsored 100 local San Bernardino County students to take part in the 2008 PeaceJam Global Call to Action Conference at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif.

The San Bernardino County students joined 3,000 youth from more than 37 countries around the globe and several leading Nobel Peace Laureates including Shirin Ebadi, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Betty Williams, Adolfo Perez Esquivel and Jody Williams.  The PeaceJam Conference gave youth the unprecedented opportunity to share with, learn from, and be inspired by the Nobel Peace Laureates.
