Race Fans Can Vote For Southern California’s 2009 Greatest Moments In Sports
Nominations include Southern California native and 4-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson’s 2009 history-making performance
San Bernardino County, Calif. (Jan. 12, 2010) – Southern California native Jimmie Johnson’s performance at Auto Club Speedway, en route to his unprecedented fourth straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title in 2009 has been nominated by the Los Angeles Sports Council as one of the L.A. area’s most memorable sports moments.
Fans can visit www.lasports.org to vote for the L.A. Sports Council’s “Greatest Sports Moments of 2009” in the L.A.-area. Voting takes place through January 31st.
The Auto Club Speedway record books were rewritten in October as El Cajon, Calif., native Johnson won his third straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pepsi 500, making him Auto Club Speedway’s winningest Cup driver with four victories in total.
The victory at the time, the 45th of Johnson’s career, moved Johnson into first place in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and six races later Johnson accomplished something far more significant than a victory in a single event and something that has never, ever been done in the sport. He clinched his unprecedented fourth straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title, breaking a tie with Cale Yarborough for most consecutive championships.
Award-winners will be revealed during the fifth annual L.A. Sports Awards on Friday, Feb. 19 at the new JW Marriott in Los Angeles.
