Auto Club Speedway to Take Flight Over Long Beach in Red Bull Flugtag
Representing the only team from the Inland Empire, Auto Club Speedway will do anything it takes to win Red Bull Flugtag
San Bernardino County, Calif. (July 7, 2010) – What do you get when Auto Club Speedway employees from the Inland Empire craft an outrageous flying machine in attempt to fly over Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach? A fish out of water story!
When the Red Bull Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, soars into Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach on Saturday, Aug. 21, 38 teams including Auto Club Speedway will attempt to fly their human-powered flying machine off a 30-foot high flight deck. The only team representing the Inland Empire is promising to create a spectacle that can only produce general merriment and excitement.
Even though their expertise is motorsports racing, the talented Auto Club Speedway team will work on perfecting their flying machine fabrication and aerodynamic design ability. All of this teamwork and camaraderie will ultimately lead to getting a car to fly off the 30-foot high flight deck.
The team, led by captain Patrick “Moose” Wuertz, submitted their entry in late February, and waited nervously for an announcement that they were one of the selected teams. When the announcement was made that they were selected, let’s just say everyone was like giddy school children after they knocked someone out of a fierce game of dodgeball. Lot’s of jumping, screaming and overall excitement. Then reality set in and the team set work finalizing their flight design.
“Being so far from the ocean, we weren’t really expecting to hear back from the Red Bull Flugtag committee,” said Wuertz. “But we did, and now we’re taking our stock cars to the water!”
Promising to bring “one minute of carefully orchestrated chaos (kinda like a pit stop)” and a cocky attitude (“We will win or we will crash hard, nothing in between.”), how could the Auto Club Speedway entry not win with its motto, “Doing anything it takes to win!”
