Apple Valley’s Sitting Bull Academy Receives Pizza Party and Visit From Lefty for Winning “Lefty’s Reading Challenge”
Auto Club Speedway Kids Club Mascot Lefty and Speedway President Gillian Zucker on hand to deliver Round Table pizza to winning school
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (May 26, 2011) – Auto Club Speedway continued its commitment to education by encouraging area students to read in Lefty’s Reading Challenge, held recently in more than 65 schools in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. That challenge led to two local elementary schools, Rancho Elementary in Temecula (who received their pizza party earlier in the month) and Sitting Bull Academy in Apple Valley, to receive $5,000 each for their libraries and a Round Table pizza party for the entire school. More than 70,000 students from the Inland Empire participated in the Reading Challenge and read over 500,000 books.
Earlier today, Sitting Bull Academy celebrated with a Round Table pizza party and a special visit from Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker and Kids Club mascot Lefty for their success. The Sitting Bull Bears read 11,880 books and had 88% of their 675 students participate.
“My students were thrilled to be able to participate in Lefty’s Reading Challenge,” said Phyllis Carnahan Sitting Bull Academy Principal. “They were ecstatic to learn that they had won the competition. I really would like to express my appreciation to Auto Club Speedway for providing such a wonderful incentive to help my students increase their reading achievement and learn to appreciate literature.”
The $5,000 awards and Round Table pizza parties were based on the school with the highest percentage of students completing the challenge (completed reading log and parent permission slip). A check for the libraries and a coupon for the pizza parties were presented to officials of each school during pre-race ceremonies at NASCAR’s Royal Purple 300 NNS race at Auto Club Speedway on March 26.
In addition, upon completion of the reading assignments students received:
• A certificate of completion
• One (1) complimentary ticket for a parent or guardian to the Royal Purple 300
• One (1) complimentary membership to Lefty’s Kids Club that got kids 12 and under free to NASCAR Qualifying Day and the Royal Purple 300
• All teachers and support staff of the winning schools received two complimentary tickets to the Auto Club 400 NSCS race on March 27 courtesy of King Taco.
