CaliConnection: How our California NASCAR drivers fared at Watkins Glen
Several NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers have California connections, including 5-time Champion Jimmie Johnson who hails from El Cajon. Below is a roundup of how each California driver fared at the rain-delayed Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen today.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (August 15, 2011) – California boasted three drivers in the Top 10 including Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and AJ Allmendinger in the final road course event of the 2011 NASCAR season. Below is how our other Golden Staters fared in today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event:
No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet
Hometown: El Cajon
3nd in points
10th PLACE FINISH: After starting 4th, Johnson finished his day in the top 10 as Aussie Marcos Ambrose (No. 9 Stanley Ford) took home the checkered for the first time in 105 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. Johnson now sits third in the standings with four races remaining until the start of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. “I’m very proud of the effort of this Lowe’s Chevrolet. To have the pace that we did all day long, even though we weren’t up there leading, we had a very fast race car and that’s what we wanted to have here.”
No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet
4th in points
6th PLACE FINISH: Harvick started 23rd on the day, and continually weaved his way toward the front of the pack, ending his Monday morning run in the Top 10 (6th), moving up to fourth in points. "We had a great car, we just didn't get track position until right there until the very end. So ok day. At the very end everybody went three wide and sliding through the first corner. I just slowed down and got into the side of the No. 48 (Jimmie Johnson) and kept digging. It got crazy but a good finish for us."
No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet

13th PLACE FINISH: Although Gordon started 17th, he made his way to a 13th place finish. Gordon remains seventh in points. “We had an awesome race car. Right from the beginning I could tell we had a pretty good race car. We drove up there a little bit, but then we got some track position and were able to stay with the leader and I felt like a few adjustments away from; I don’t know about a winning car, but a really good race car.
