Meet and Greets, Favorite Treats, Tweet Suites All Part of Successful Auto Club 400 Weekend

Auto Club Speedway

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif.  (March 27, 2012) – With a myriad of activities surrounding Auto Club 400 Weekend at Auto Club Speedway, race fans no doubt left the property Sunday worn out and looking forward to the flurry of events already being planned for 2013.

Here’s just sampling of what Auto Club Speedway had to offer:

FEET TO PAVEMENT:  Hundreds of fans kicked off their race morning with NASCAR drivers and Coca-Cola Racing Family members Ryan Newman and Bobby Labonte at the Coca-Cola Family Track Walk.  They didn’t go 200mph, but they did walk on the same track that Tony Stewart claimed his win on later in the day.

FEET IN PAVEMENT:  The right foot may have sunk a little lower than the left, but that was to be expected from last year’s Auto Club 400 winner Kevin Harvick, who firmly planted both feet into the cement at the Walk of Fame ceremony commemorating his dramatic 2011 victory.

FUN TIME IN THE FUN ZONE:  Auto Club Speedway, with help from Speedway Mascot Lefty, NASCAR Driver Trevor Bayne, Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson), Tillman (the skateboarding bulldog from “Who Let the Dogs Out” on Animal Planet) and of course plenty of kids, Lefty unveiled his weekend domain ‘Lefty’s Fun Zone’ which offered kids and their families everything from hands on educational programs like the Math & Science of NASCAR displays to kid favorite activities like Bubble Rollers, a Pinewood Derby and photo opportunities with some of the best NASCAR drivers around when they were kids and much more!

RIDE-ALONG WITH JOEY:  Auto Club Speedway season ticket holders were treated to a train ride with NASCAR star Joey Logano, Speedway President Gillian Zucker and Miss Sprint Cup as the entourage took part in Speedway Day L.A., culminating with a press conference on the steps of L.A. Union Station.

BIRD’S EYE VIEW:  Our garage package fans enjoyed something new – a walk on a raised platform through the middle of the top ten garage.  Its popularity prompted fans to say it’s “the closest you could ever get without being a team owner”.

IS THAT JR. OVER THERE?:  Fans who purchased the Dale and Danica Q&A ticket package had an added surprise when, after their Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Q&A, they were invited by NASCAR to stay for the Sprint Cup Driver’s meeting, a first ever at Auto Club Speedway.

EVERYONE LOVES A PARADE: The spectacle of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Hauler Parade made its way to Auto Club Speedway through Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana, highlighted by NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray making an appearance along the way at Bass Pro Shops.

SWEET TWEET:  20 lucky “tweeters” who follow @ACSUpdates spent time in an exclusive luxury Suite above Pit Road as part of a thank you from Auto Club Speedway for following us.  Tillman the skateboarding dog, Speedway President Gillian Zucker and Miss Sprint Cup all stopped by to tweet with ACS’s finest.

I DISCOVERED THE IE FANZONE:  From Night Ranger to King Taco to Pinks Hot Dogs to Viva la Fiesta to drivers apparel the DiscoverIE FanZone had something for everyone.

TRAIN, TRAIN COME MY WAY:  The return of the Metrolink train service provided fans a stress-free, convenient and affordable way to get to Auto Club Speedway on race day – all for just $19 roundtrip from numerous stops across Southern California.

2 + 2 = WHAT?:   With the help of Michael Waltrip Racing’s Director of Engineering Steve Boyer, 600 area middle school students found out how math, science and NASCAR all go together at ACS’s annual Math and Science Day.

CELEBRITY DRIVERS: Some of the biggest names in entertainment, music and sports including Bruce Jenner, Frankie Muniz and Hank Baskett participated in the first-annual DRIVE4COPD Pro-Am Celebrity Racing Challenge on DRIVE4COPD Qualifying Day to benefit the millions of Americans living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  Nineteen celebrities participated in this first-of-its-kind racing event, raising more than $150,000.  NASCAR Drivers Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Elliott Sadler and Greg Biffle all captained teams with Team Biffle – including Jenner, Baskett, Kristy Swanson, Bill Fichtner and X Games champion Todd Potter winning the competition.

DANICA THERE AND GORDON OVER THERE:  Fans enjoyed appearances by Danica Patrick, Jeff Gordon, David Gilliland, AJ Allmendinger, Marcos Ambrose, Jamie McMurray, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Bobby Labonte, Juan Pablo Montoya, Trevor Bayne, and of course all the stars of the NNS series held an autograph session during the weekend.

CHECKERED FLAG: Oh yea, we had racing too as Tony Stewart took the rain-shortened checkered flag at the Auto Club 400 and Joey Logano took first in the NNS Royal Purple 300 – Joe Gibbs Racing’s 8th straight victory at Southern California’s premier motorsports facility.
