CaliConnection: How our California NASCAR Drivers Fared at Kentucky

Below is a roundup of how each California driver fared at their respective races this weekend.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (July 2, 2012) –  Driving his backup No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge, Brad Keselowski raced to his series-leading third victory of the year, grabbing the lead with 55 laps remaining and holding off all challengers on Saturday night in the Quaker State 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway.

Below is how our California drivers fared Saturday night.

Jimmie Johnson
No. 48 Lowe’s Dover White Chevrolet
CaliConnection: El Cajon
3rd in points

6th PLACE FINISH:   Pole-winner Johnson came home in sixth-place, but had a strong car early in the race running at or in front before losing track position late in the race.  He led four different times for 21 laps.  “I really think that on that restart I got in some oil or the track was still slick from that stay dry being down.  I got loose a couple of times, lost a bunch of track position.”

Kevin Harvick
No. 29 Budweiser Folds of Honor Chevrolet
CaliConnection: Bakersfield
6th in points

11th PLACE FINISH:  Harvick and the No. 29 Budweiser Folds of Honor team crossed the finish line in the 11th position after battling handling issues during the 267-lap event. Harvick remains sixth in the overall points. "It was a tough night for the Budweiser Folds of Honor team. We spent all night fighting handling issues and just couldn't get the car where we wanted it. We'll put this race behind us and start preparing for Daytona (International Speedway) next week in hope of finding a better finish."

Jeff Gordon
No. 24 Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet
CaliConnection: Vallejo

AJ Allmendinger
No. 22 Shell Penzoil Dodge
CaliConnection: Los Gatos
23th in points

9th PLACE FINISH:   Allmendinger finished 9th despite running out of gas on the final lap.  “I was happy with the way most of the day went, especially around here because I haven’t been good around here.  We’ve got to learn how to keep up with the racetrack.  Obviously we show we got speed.  We just got to be able to keep up better, whether that’s better info or whatever we need to do.  We just kind of lack that in that area right now.  We get better at that we got the speed obviously.  We’ll hopefully keep getting better.”
