Penske Racing Dominates Qualifying at IndyCar Championship

FONTANA, Calif. – Penske Racing’s Will Power, Helio Castroneves and AJ Allmendinger captured front row spots for Saturday night's season-ending race at Auto Club Speedway during qualifying on Friday.

Castroneves now has a 25-point deficit and is trying to catch points leader Scott Dixon, who qualified seventh, for the IndyCar title. Power knocked Castroneves from the pole with a 220.775 mph lap while Castroneves ran a 219.677 mph lap.

IndyCar officials moved the start of Saturday’s race from 5:50 p.m. to 6:10 p.m.because of concern over glare from the sun in Turn 3.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that the IndyCar Series 2014 schedule would be shortened but will again conclude at Auto Club Speedway.

The 18-race schedule will run from March 30 to Aug. 30 during the Labor Day weekend, and will end with back-to-back races in California with Sonoma on Aug. 24, followed by Fontana the following week.

Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker said the “RV crowd” would be happy with the change. “It's always nice to have a firm place on the schedule because people do plan in advance,” Zucker said. “The good news is this announcement is being made now, so people have a whole year to plan for it.”
