Lefty's Reading Challenge Participant Honored in a Special Way by Auto Club Speedway

Kameron’s Ride to School

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. – (Oct. 14, 2013) – Amid cheers, tears, smiles and high fives, Cleminson School's Kameron Blanks had perhaps the morning of his life!

Greeted by Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker at his home doorstep early Friday morning, the fifth-grader was chauffeured twice – once in the Speedway’s Pace Car (to school) and once in the Speedway’s IZOD IndyCar Showcar.  In the latter, he was dropped of at the front door of the school in the midst of cheering students, teachers and family, then taken to a special school assembly – to recognize him.

The special day honored Kameron for taking part in the “Lefty’s Reading Challenge” – a program with a goal of showing the importance of reading as a foundation for future student growth. More than 100,000 students from 175 area elementary schools read more than more than 700,000 books as part of “Lefty’s Reading Challenge” in 2013.
Kameron epitomized what Lefty’s Reading Challenge was all about.  Making huge strides in English/Language Arts his state testing scores went from Proficient to Advanced – an improvement of 46 points.  And his scholastic reading scores surged by 65 points.

“We are all so thankful for the opportunity this morning,” said Kameron’s grandmother.  “We are so proud of Kameron for his accomplishments.  He was so excited he was speechless!”

Added school librarian Kathy Evanilla: “This program can inspire and help our kids not just to read more, but read better.  How unique the program is and what a great opportunity for the kids to be rewarded for their efforts; and most of all, what a great way to provide parents with a chance to do something with their kids that is a result of a reward for academics”

In addition to Zucker, Dr. Lillian Prince, Cleminson School Principal, school librarian Evanilla, Cynthia Traino, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, El Monte City School District and Kameron’s mother and grandmother were all on hand to recognize Kameron.

Lefty’s Reading Challenge, offered to schools in San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles Counties rewards school winners with thousands of dollars for their school libraries.
