The El Cajon, California native launched the Jimmie Johnson Foundation in 2006, which is dedicated to helping children, families and communities in need. Through his efforts more than $15 million has been contributed to various organizations.

Jimmie Johnson's Legacy

"I'm just a guy from California who always wanted to race."

Those were the words of the ever-humble Jimmie Johnson, one of the most decorated champions in stock-car racing history, after his record-tying seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2016.

When he started racing motorcycles at the age of 4, the El Cajon, California, native  never expected – nor even dreamed so big – to have accomplished all that he has in his motor sports career. As Johnson makes his final full-time start at Auto Club Speedway this weekend, he recalled the first win at the two-mile track back in 2002 – in just his 13th start – that changed everything.

“Winning that first race in my home state was truly one of the highlights of my career to this day,” Johnson said. “I remember thinking to myself, this is just unbelievable. To be this competitive in the Cup Series has always been a dream of mine and I can’t believe I actually won this race. It was so incredibly special to win in my home state in front of my home crowd. It was a moment I will never forget.”

Since the first win at Auto Club, Johnson has won at Auto Club Speedway a record six times – the most of any driver all-time. His most recent trip to Victory Lane at the track came in 2016 while driving a fitting “Superman” paint scheme. Over 25 starts at the venue, he has completed 100 percent of all laps run and has led 980 laps in the process. Johnson has also scored 13 top-five finishes and 17 top-10s.
